Luis Cernuda: "Reality", "desire" and sanjuanism
Abstract
The poets of the Generation of ’27 turned their attention to the Classics in order to pay them tribute and rediscover their works at the same time. In the case of Luis Cernuda, several studies have been devoted to his aesthetic views and many scholars have pointed out that the three pillars of Cernuda’s poetics are Garcilaso de la Vega, san Juan de la Cruz and Becquer. These provided it with sensibility, lyricism and love. The main purpose of this study is to highlight the mystical imprint of San Juan de la Cruz on Cernuda’s poetry. Firstly, we are concerned with Cernuda’s poems showing an explicit resemblance to the verses of San Juan de la Cruz, analysing the poetic techniques used. Secondly, we demonstrate how the mystical steps of San Juan de la Cruz, namely the contemplation and the union with the loved one, have been developed in Cernuda’s poetry.Downloads
