Abstract

One of the most complex points of 20th century Spanish literary history is the reception of the narrative works written by exiled authors after the Civil War. This essay is an approach to the process of sudden recovery of their works after more than twenty years of banishment which took place in the last decade of Francoism and coincided with the so-called boom of Spanish American literature. In the introductory pages, the most remarkable features of this socio-literary phenomenon are analysed considering its various dimensions: the importance of censorship, the publishing context, the interests of cultural policies and the reaction of the actors of Peninsular cultural field. The core of the article is focused on how the literary supplements of three of national newspapers ―ABC, Informaciones and Pueblo― looked at the so-called «operación retorno» of exiled narrators. Book reviews, interviews and articles have been compiled in order to show the partial and conditioned reintegration of some exile authors in the literary canon.
