Cause Clauses as Verb Phrase Adjuncts in Written Texts
Abstract
This paper focuses on the use of cause clauses in Spanish written texts when they serve as adjuncts of the verb phrase. In the first part, the taxonomy of causal constructions from which the analysis will be carried out is presented and the nature of the corpus on which it is based is described. Then the analysis is divided into two parts, the first of which considers the major issues of syntactic complexity of the constructions and their performance in the four major discourse modes (narratives, descriptions, instructions and expositions), as well as the morphological nature of the verbs used in cause clauses. The second part of this paper assesses the performance of the causal nexuses used, paying particular attention to two main issues: the nature of the cause clauses and their position within the verb phrase.
