Women’s empowerment in American classic movie characters (1945-1959): cases and ideology
Abstract
The article focuses on the classic American cinematography of the period between 1945 and 1959, analyzing the singular cases in which one can speak of women’s empowerment. Within an eminently masculinized sociopolitical context, Hollywood typologies predominantly express a masculine perspective, but this general model leaves room for the emergence of isolated cases, both of filmmakers and narrative structures that advance a gender approach against the current. The review stops at certain artists of these works, and in the genres and themes in which they appear, notably the western - with emblematic cases like Johnny Guitar (Nicholas Ray, 1954), raising from his existence of a series of significant ideological effects.Downloads
