Why does the inequality between women and men persist in Spanish universities?
Abstract
Spanish public universities have solid strengths that have been maintained over the decades. However, we can also point out solid weaknesses that are as persistent as the strengths. In this paper, I will point out those weak points in relation to the objective of reaching a more egalitarian university in terms of sex/gender. I will focus on employment and promotion issues in the academic career of full-time teaching and research staff (PDI). For this analysis, I will start from the recent studies and reports that different ministries and institutions have published with updated data for the years 2020 to 2023. In this analysis, I will propose a feminist conceptual framework from which to address the barriers that maintain inequality. This is the framework that is based on the concepts of academic patriarchy and academic capitalism. The contribution will be a reflection that, based on feminist demands, explains a route out of this academic patriarchy.
