Research Trends about Reggaetón and Future Fields of Knowledge of an Expanding Sociocultural Phenomenon

Abstract

With the aim of mapping the current state of academic knowledge about reggaetón and its prospects for growth, 69 articles published between 2006 and 2022 were selected and used to identify recurring researchers, disciplinary areas, locations of research practices and preferred aspects and approaches. 71% of researchers were found to be women. Most of the texts provide historical overviews of the emergence of reggaetón as a musical genre and reflect on the social, cultural and political effects of a musical genre that sparked polemics in various Latin American territories. One of the main areas of study have been its lyrics. The conclusions range from identifying the genre as perpetuating violence against women or as a subverter of sex-gender. There is a need to research the audiences and configuration of identities that emerge from a dance style like the perreo and foster research from Latin America to boost academic studies in Spanish.
