The Production and Construction of a Spanish Success Story: A Study of the Premiere of The Land of Joy (1917) by Joaquín “Quinito” Valverde in New York
Abstract
This article describes the production processes of the Spanish zarzuela The Land of Joy by Joaquín [Quinito] Valverde (Madrid, 1875-Mexico City, 1918), premiered in New York on 1 November 1917. Here we will not study its reception or the historical context in which Spanish theatre was received in the USA, but rather we will describe the workings of the stage music industry and the gestation of this exceptional case, describing the circumstances that led to the staging of the revue with the participation of leading Spanish artists, and with high standards of decoration and costumes. The ultimate aim of this work is to describe, from a structural and musical point of view, the version that premiered first in Havana and then in New York, in order to be able to interpret the data obtained in subsequent works.
