Abstract

During the Spanish Transition, the daily newspaper ABC sought ways to do away with an editorial line loyal to Francoism in order to fit in with the new cultural and social structures democracy brought. Despite women gaining prominence in society and in different public settings during this period, their presence on newspaper editorial teams was still rare. Therefore, it was inevitably men who wrote about women, something which had a clear impact on the prevailing discourses about women. This article outlines the presence of women in ABC, as journalists and musicians, observing how they are included or excluded in the paper’s discourse about music and how they are portrayed, as well as the profiles of the journalists who contributed to the newspaper.
