Sound, Religion and Nueva Canción Chilena: An Analysis of Rolando Alarcón’s “El hombre”
Abstract
Taking the song “El hombre” by Rolando Alarcón as a case study, this article analyses the religious meanings present in the Nueva Canción Chilena movement on a sound level. Divided into five parts, the article takes Philip Tagg’s analytical proposal of inter-objective (or intertextual) comparison as its basis. The first part is an introduction to the research. The second outlines certain considerations and methodological criteria in regard to Tagg’s proposal. The third reviews some antecedents of the song “El hombre”, as well as its form and lyrics. The fourth is an interobjective music analysis centred on five musemas. Finally, some conclusions and perspectives on the study are presented.
