Abstract
The present article aims to provide an overview of the musical activity and thought accompanying Spanish Institutionism and Krausism.A unitary analysis of the aesthetic, pedagogical and social ideas of both intellectual movements, as well as their music-related activity, will be carried out. Followers of these movements practised serious and academic musical criticism and historiography. They sought to propagate musical culture in Spain through lectures and concerts, defending the gestation of national music with universal aspirations. They were especially concerned that music should form part of all educative projects, all of which was directly connected with their philosophical ideology.
