Abstract
Based on unpublished sources located at the Archive of the Villa de Madrid, the present article puts forth new reflections on the organisation of opera, its productive systems and its connections to Madrilenian society during the first half of the nineteenth century.This research focuses on the 1825-1826 season at the Teatro del Príncipe and the work of Cristóbal Fernández de la Cuesta, who was sent to Milan to form a stable Italianopera company.The study is based on Cuesta’s letters and documentation dating from his 1825 and 1826 trip to Milan as an agent for the Teatro del Príncipe de Madrid.
