Música, poder y estatus: los rabelistas en Cantabria
Abstract
This article aims at analyzing the ways in which since the nineteenth century rabelistas (rabel players) in the region of Cantabria (Spain) used their performance practice to express social struggle and their changing positions and attitudes towards domination and social exclusion. The analysis also attempts to show different performance strategies and discourses by rabelistas relating to their status in different historical moments. For that purpose, I examine several elements of rabel performance, reflecting upon how the practice of this traditionally rural musical instrument, connoted with singing subversive lyrics, changed significantly within the context of urban musical revival and emblematization of the instrument and its repertoire since the 1980s.Downloads
