Introduction
The Complutense Journal of English Studies (CJES, ISSN: 2386-3935 / ISSN-e: 2386-6624), founded in 1993, is a scientific periodical publication published by the Departmentof English Studies: Linguistics and Literature in the Faculty of Languages at UniversidadComplutense de Madrid. It is a one-issue-per-year journal with a double-blind peer review system, publishing research articles and book reviews in the areas of English linguistics and literatures in English. CJES aims at stimulating scientific debate among scholars, encouraging different perspectives on the latest developments in the field of English studies and related areas and inviting original manuscripts which make a refreshing contribution. CJES has now adopted a continuous periodicity publication system, by which authors may send their manuscripts throughout the whole year.
1. Management bodies
The management bodies responsible for the scientific coordination and publication of the journal are the Editorial Board and the Advisory Board. All members of these boards undertake to respect the principles of the Code of Ethics established for scientific journals by Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM). Likewise, the journal is pledged to defend gender equality by maintaining gender parity in these management boards.
1.1 Editorial Board: structure and composition
- The Editorial Board will be made up of the Editor-in-Chief, the Associate Editor, and eight external members, four for each study area represented in the journal. The position of Editor-in-Chief must be filled by an active lecturer with a contractual relationship with UCM. At least one third of its members must belong to institutions other than UCM. If the Department so wishes, two Editors-in-Chief may be proposed, with equal rights and duties, who would look after the needs of the two main study areas represented in the journal. Similarly, two Associate Editors may be proposed to coordinate the functions of the two areas mentioned.
- The Editorial Board will assist the Editor-in-Chief in all their functions and, especially, in the handling of the manuscripts (receipt, review and acceptance) and in the definition of the contents, quality standards and style of the journal (writing of guidelines for the submission of originals, creation and orientation of sections, etc.).
- The members of the Editorial Board will be elected in separate votes for each position: Editor-in-Chief, Associate Editor and external members, who will be chosen from among distinguished scholars and experts in the study fields of the journal. The position of Associate Editor will be directly appointed by the Editor-in-Chief.
- All members will be elected for a period of six years and may only be re-elected to their position for a second period of six years.
- Ediciones Complutense will be notified of the new members of the Editorial Board, including the Editor-in-Chief and Associate Editor, as soon as they are elected.
1.1.1. Duties of the Editor-in-Chief
- The Editor-in-Chief will be responsible for the coordination and representation of the journal and for relations with the Editorial Board, Advisory Board and Ediciones Complutense. Similarly, they will be responsible for relations with other institutions for any matters related to the journal.
- The Editor-in-Chief will appoint the Associate Editor.
- The Editor-in-Chief will convene the meetings of the Editorial Board.
- The Editor-in-Chief will be obliged to inform the Departmental Board about the operation of the journal, as well as its needs.
- The Editor-in-Chief will be responsible for ensuring that the highest possible scientific quality of the journal is maintained, as well as for its recognition and inclusion in national and international databases and its evaluation to obtain quality seals, in which area they will have the support of the other members of the Editorial Board.
- The Editor-in-Chief will have a casting vote in the event of a tie in the deliberations of the Editorial Board.
1.1.2. Duties of the Associate Editor
- The Associate Editor will be responsible for receiving the originals and managing them throughout the review and publication process.
- The Associate Editor will be responsible for communication with the authors, the members of the Editorial Board, the Advisory Board and Ediciones Complutense.
- The Associate Editor will confirm the receipt of all manuscripts received with the authors.
- The Associate Editor will organise the process for checking the originals received by the Editorial Board so that a decision can be made on which papers to review and which to return, once compliance with the journal’s requirements has been verified.
- The Associate Editor will be responsible for sending the originals to the reviewers along with an instruction document and review template through the OJS platform.
- Once the decision on whether to publish the originals has been made, the Associate Editor will be responsible for sending notification of the decision to the authors, justifying the decision.
- The Associate Editor will be responsible for monitoring the complete publishing process for the journal’s issues (preparation and delivery of manuscripts, including the first pages and statistics, layout process, sending proofs to authors, reviewing the version prior to publishing, notification to the authors of the publication).
- The Associate Editor will draw up the minutes of the meetings of the Editorial Board. Similarly, they will be responsible for the safeguarding of the minutes and will certify the work carried out by the members, scientific advisers and reviewers.
- The Associate Editor will collaborate with the Editor-in-Chief in the publicising of the journal, institutional relations, exchanges, indexing and any other tasks that result in an improvement in the quality and recognition of the journal.
- Where appropriate, when carrying out their ordinary tasks the Associate Editor will have the support of the department through collaboration scholarship holders.
1.1.3. Duties of the Members of the Editorial Board
- The members of the Editorial Board will be obliged to attend any meetings that are convened. As far as possible, meetings will be held online.
- The members will take part in the desk acceptance or rejection of the manuscripts to assist in the initial decision about which will be reviewed and which will be returned to the authors.
- The members will help with the search for external reviewers for the papers and will not under any circumstances be reviewers.
- The members will advise and collaborate with the journal’s management in any tasks deemed necessary for the smooth running of the journal, including ensuring compliance with punctuality and timeliness. In addition to bringing rigour to the journal, it will help make the journal attractive to both authors and readers and publicise it, as far as possible, in all forums. Similarly, it will support the evaluation and audit processes.
1.2. Advisory Board
- The Advisory Board will be made up of professionals and researchers of recognised prestige and soundness, with no institutional ties to the journal.
- At least one tenth of the Advisory Board must consist of members who are distinguished professionals and researchers in international institutions.
- The process of proposing and electing the members of the Advisory Board will be the responsibility of the journal’s Editorial Board.
- The members of the Advisory Board may participate in the processes of reviewing originals as external peers, taking into account that at least one of the reviews must always be undertaken by a reviewer who is not a member of the Advisory Board.
- Along with the Editorial Board, it will help publicise the journal, as far as possible, in all forums, making it attractive to both authors and readers.
2. Features and operation
2.1. Frequency
- CJES has adopted a system of continuous periodicity publication, by means of which researchers may send their manuscripts throughout the whole year.
- The journal will be published once a year. In addition, on an extraordinary basis, the journal may propose to Ediciones Complutense the publication of a special issue.
2.2. Structure
The journal will consist of the following sections: English Linguistics and English Literature. The journal will publish contributions in the form of articles, reviews and interviews written in English.

2.4. Operation
Each proposal will be managed independently. Once received, if it meets the journal’s requirements, it will be submitted for double-blind peer review. In view of the evaluation reports, the Editorial Board will make a decision. Each author will receive a final decision on their proposal within a maximum period of six months. The duration of the evaluation process will condition the actual publication, which can take a maximum of a whole year.
2.5. Amendments
The Editorial Board may decide to make any changes of a formal nature recommended by Ediciones Complutense or by the quality control agencies for scientific publications. 3. Approval and review of the Articles of Association These Articles of Association have been approved, on the 8th of May of 2023, by the Council of the Department of English Studies: Linguistics and Literature. This Department Council may, on its own initiative or at the request of the competent bodies in the UCM, renew or modify these Articles of Association if considered necessary
