“Tell Your Excellency to the boss to get me out as soon as possible”. About the forms of sociability in the Spanish diplomatic corps in the 18th century. The case of Bernardo de Iriarte and the Count of Fuentes
Abstract
The Canary-born Bernardo de Iriarte, who belonged to a well knew family of enlightened, was the perfect example of Spanish professional diplomat of the 18th century. He met Joaquín Pignatelli de Aragón, count of Fuentes, in London between 1760 and 1762 when the latter was ambassador of His Catholic Majesty and Iriarte first secretary of the embassy. The Iriarte’s removal had a very personal motivation, a point confirmed in a not so usual documentation of the Secretary of State although the specialized literature attributes it to the break of the Spanish-British war of 1762.
