“He knows that many stones of the said jasper have been worked”: the ownership of the quarries of “Jaspe de Espejón” (Soria) in the 16th century
Abstract
There is an added value of Espejon´s limestones quarries (Soria) beyond its use as a decorative material for emblematic buildings, such as cathedrals (Toledo, Burgos and Segovia), monasteries (El Escorial) or palaces (Palacio Real, Madrid). A wide perspective of the originals from the 16th to the 18th centuries reveals its significance as a natural resource not only in the regional socio-economic development but also in the stratification of the Old Regime society. The Monarchy, San Jerónimo de Espeja Monastery and Concejos of Espejón and Huerta de Rey appeared fighting for its control as a source of power.
