The 'valido' in the Hall of Realms: new iconographic keys in 'Recapture of Bahía' by Maíno
Abstract
This article offers a new iconographic reading of the image of the Valido provided by Juan Bautista Maíno in his masterpiece Recapture of Bahía. In the light of new testimonies from the emblematic tradition (Villaba, Zincgreff) and laudatory poetry (Góngora), the symbolic meaning of the attribute hold by the Count Duke in the tapestry of the Triumph of Philip IV (a sword wrapped in olive branches) is interpretated.
