The favouritism of Beltrán de la Cueva: Foundation, promotion and continuity of the House of Alburquerque (1456-1492)
Abstract
This article analyses the ascent of Beltrán de la Cueva to the high nobility of Castile as I. duke of Alburquerque. The favouritism he received from Enrique IV will be the focus from which we will examine his career. We will analyse his activities as a private, and his policy after the king's death that consisted of ensuring the conservation and transmission of his heritage to his successor. This study compares his activities to other privates and favourites from the medieval and modern times, a methodology that allows us to identify the unique and standard features of his ascent. Consequently, we will be able to study the complicated relationship between the structural elements of society and the action of individuals, that existed within each historical conjuncture.
