Abstract

The growing and lucrative presence that the Dutch rebels had been developing in the Moluccas since the end of the 16th century made the Hispanic Monarchy during the reign of Philip III contemplate these islands as a useful space where to achieve a decisive victory against their Dutch enemies. This consideration would lead to a progressive militarization of the region that would turn it into one of the most conflictive of this period. This study aims to analyze how the involvement of the Monarchy in the Moluccas area evolved and how the militarization of the region developed during the entire reign of Philip III.
