Abstract

In 1605, the Irish Tercio was raised to serve in the Spanish Army of Flanders. This study describes the circumstances –military and diplomatic– that made feasible the creation of this unit. In 1620, it was considered one of the most battle-hardened Tercios serving the Spanish Monarchy in the Catholic Low Countries. Further, this provides a detailed analysis of the companies which formed the Tercio, how they were recruited, and the number of soldiers and officers who served in its ranks during those fifteen years.
