An ethics of excellence: Cayetana de la Cerda and the circulation of Mme. de Lambert in Spain
Abstract
This article summarizes the main lines of thought of Anne-Thérèse Marguenat, marquise de Lambert (1647-1733), and delves into the echo that her work had in Spain, unveiling some scarcely known episodes and shedding light on the context in which the Spanish version of her essays was finally written and published, as well as on the intellectual profile and social circumstances of the translator, Cayetana de la Cerda y Vera, Countess of Lalaing (1755-1798). The aim is to analyze the practices of cultural transfer and mediation and to ask about the meanings with which her thought and her figure were invested by the subjects involved in reading, translation and circulation.Downloads
