Table and diplomacy in the 18th-Century: the art of impressing Portuguese ambassadors

Keywords: banquets, China, diplomacy, Genoa, Morocco, Portugal, Rome, Vienna

Abstract

Using four case studies, two in Europe, another in Asia and a third in Africa, we intend to evaluate the way in which Portuguese ambassadors were received in protocol matters and, in particular, at banquets, during the 18th century. Food, politics and diplomacy appear as a trilogy whose importance immediately revealed the success or failure of a diplomatic mission.
