Analysis of the news coverage of the 2018 FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup in 'Marca' and 'As'
Abstract
The objective of this research is to analyze from a gender perspective the news coverage of the 2018 FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup. The methodology is based on a quantitative content analysis and a qualitative analysis of the gender biases present in all the information published in the paper copies of the sports newspapers Marca and As. The results show that most of the news coverage of the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2018 is based on short pieces of information. 90.3% are indoor news, of which only 14.09% appeared on the front page. The triumphs of the sportswomen do not guarantee better coverage, not even the bronze medal of the Spanish team was the main news on the front page. In 3 out of 10 news items analysed (31.7%) women are the protagonists, but the name of the coach was used as a source on a greater number of occasions.
