Tensions from a gender perspective regarding the democratizing potential of free software

Keywords: gender gap, free technologies, activism, communities, androcentrism

Abstract

This paper seeks to explore and analyze the tensions between the premises oriented to the democratization of technologies and the gender gap that characterizes free software. With this purpose, it highlights a set of aspects in which free software reinforces the androcentric patterns of traditional computer science, as well as the limits that these biases imply for the democratizing interests that this field of activism proclaims. To address and develop this issue, the article recovers the results of an ethnographic research already completed, taking the experiences and testimonies of activists from local communities as a guiding thread.
