Disarticulating female representations: ways of constructing the meaning of being a woman from the video art practice
Abstract
n the first video art practices, the influence of feminism can be perceived due to the spatio-temporal confluence of the development of a new artistic tool and the Third Feminist Wave. Starting from this premise, the aim of this paper is to analyze the strategies of representation of the female figure in the first works produced during the seventies, especially in the American context. The object of study was approached from a gender perspective. Also, methods from the field of the arts were employed in order to analyze the video art pieces. The results show other forms of identification and constitution of female identity that break the traditional schemes of representing women in film and television.
