Olympism, gender and communication: an approach to women's sport and its representation in sports media
Abstract
Sport has been a space of exclusion for women from its origins. Women have had to challenge social norms and conventions in order to access this traditionally masculine space. This article studies the research carried out on the presence and evolution of women in elite sport through the Olympic Games and their coverage in the sports media. The main objective is to define the way in which female athletes are represented through these media and if there are still imbalances in gender coverage today. It is established that athletes and their professional achievements are underrepresented and trivialized, as well as the existence of gender biases and stereotypes that limit the advancement of women in sports.
