Methodologies to support the implementation, in the municipality of Évora (Portugal), of prevention and social protection policies, aimed at the Homeless: a collaborative action-research experience between civil society and the university

Abstract

The article intends to present for appreciation and debate, a set of action-research methodologies, with a view to supporting prevention and social protection measures when working with vulnerable groups, namely homeless people. Based on an experience between the university and civil society, collaborative practices and skills to be mobilized by professionals who intervene in these publics, in the municipality of Évora (Portugal) are highlighted. It is intended, to provide professionals with knowledge with a view to qualifying their work with vulnerable groups, in a context of an integrated production of knowledge and practices between academics and technicians, who develop intervention work on the homeless.

Author Biographies

Maria da Saudade Baltazar, a:1:{s:5:"es_ES";s:33:"CICS.NOVA- Universidade de Évora

Maria da Saudade Baltazar has a PhD in Sociology from the University of Évora (UE), a Master's in Sociology from the Technical University of Lisbon | Higher Institute of Social and Political Sciences and a degree in Sociology from the UE.  She is a specialist in Peace and Conflict Resolution (recognition by UE). She is currently Associate Professor at UE in the Department of Sociology of the School of Social Sciences. She is an integrated researcher at the Interdisciplinary Center for Social Sciences (CICS.NOVA). She coordinated the CICS.NOVA.UÉvora (2015-2020).  She is a member of the Board of the Regional Network Southern European Societies (European Sociological Association). Since 1990, the researcher has been teaching and researching in the areas of Development, Planning, and Defence and Security, with coordination and participation in research projects financed by national and European funds. The latest publications address public policies aimed at former combatants; participatory methodologies for territorial development; territorial, social and gender inequalities; higher education, human rights and security.

Marcos Olímpio dos Santos holds a degree and a PhD in Sociology from the University of Évora. Former university professor (University of Évora and Higher Institute of Social Service. Integrated researcher at CICS.NOVA (Interdisciplinary Center for Social Sciences). Trainer on topics related to development and social inclusion. Member of teams or evaluator of Municipal Social Networks and of several Equal, PROGRIDE, Interreg and Ser Criança projects, socioeconomic diagnoses and strategic plan
