The island councils of the Canary Islands: a challenge for regional governance?
Abstract
This work will address the existing problems in the Canary Islands through its particular form of institutional organization. The Island Councils as the highest political bodies of the island, have played an important role in the historical development of the Canary Islands, in some cases as mechanisms for resolving the so-called Canarian problem and, in others, as elements that empower the island itself. This has led to a confrontation between the community/regional element and the insular space. Through the empirical analysis of the valuations in the provision of public services provided by the different administrations in the archipelago, it will be observed what value Canarian society gives to the insular sand, and whether there are substantial differences with respect to the autonomous space.
