Reported speech in the letters of Francesco and Margherita Datini. Syntactic and discourse configurations
Abstract
The paper addresses some aspects of “reported speech” in the correspondence of Francesco and Margherita Datini, highlighting the peculiar interaction between pragmatic, discursive and syntactic factors that we can observe in epistolary writing, a textual type constitutively dialogic and polyphonic. In particular, we analyze the organization of the enunciative planes, the intermingling of direct and indirect speech, the use of reportative evidential formulas and the co-occurrence of topicalization and representation processes of others’ words.
