Between history’s spirals and failures: A critical approach to the influence of Alejo Carpentier’s Il secolo dei lumi on Vincenzo Consolo’s Il sorriso dell’ignoto marinaio
Abstract
This paper seeks to critically examine the influence of Alejo Carpentier’s Il secolo dei lumi (1962), translated by Maria Vasta Dazzi in 1964, on Vincenzo Consolo’s Il sorriso dell’ignoto marinaio (1976), both historical novels. The main purpose is to provide some thematic patterns and philological tools in order to analyze thoroughly such a controversial trail, which is subject of debate among Consolo scholars.
