Nomad Writers: The Writing in the Third Language of Jhumpa Lahiri and the Plurilingual Poetry of Amelia Rosselli
Abstract
This essay is a comparative study of the writing in the third language of the Indian-American writer Jhumpa Lahiri (1967) and the plurilingual poetry of the Italian poet Amelia Rosselli (1930-1996). Both writers have been identified as nomads for their identity without borders and their writings free from defined regulations. Notwithstanding the time laps of around half century that separates their writings and the difference of literary genre between prose and poetry, their nomadic identity brought their language close together. Therefore, considering the prose of In altre parole (2015) and Dove mi trovo (2018) of Lahiri and the collections of poetry Variazioni Belliche (1964), Primi Scritti (1980) and Impromptu (1981) of Rosselli, this study offers a critical reflection on the characteristics of nomadic or transnational literature.
