«A sword so shining and sharp». Dante’s fear and Saint Paul’s literary auctoritas in the 'Divine Comedy'

Abstract

The article takes a fresh view on Saint Paul’s role in the Divine Comedy. Differently from recent research according to which the Apostle only serves as a model to Dante the wayfarer who ends up enjoying a vision of God, this study will show the extent to which the Apostle may have also served as a model to Dante the poet. It will analyze Dante’s description of Saint Paul in the allegorical procession in Purgatory XXIX and how it relates to Homer in Limbus, as well as the sophisticated allusions to Saint Paul in the invocation to Apollo in Paradiso I that link the Apostle to the poet’s linguistical and poetical experiments in the third Cantica.
