Teaching the discursive markers allora, dunque and beh: Italian L2 learners’ metapragmatic reflections

Abstract

This study describes a pedagogical proposal focusing on discourse markers, allora (so), dunque (therefore), beh (well) and analyses the metapragmatic reflections of Italian L2 learners in the development of interactive activities in which they are asked to use these discourse markers. This is a longitudinal study on Italian as foreign language students (A1 level). The resources used in class are from the coursebook Al Dente 1, which contains activities that highlight the semantic meaning, functions and use of these discourse markers. The results demonstrate that the activities help the students to reflect on the discourse markers on focus in this study. Furthermore, at different stages of the language course, the students were able to use the previously studied DMs even when they were no longer the focus of the teaching activity, to increase their fluency, specifically at the beginning of the turn.
