Ariosto’s tradition and mythological memory in "Menzogna e sortilegio"
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to recognize a relationship between Elisa, the narrator of Morante’s Menzogna e Sortilegio, and Melissa the sorceress, from Ariosto’s Orlando Furioso. Literary themes of magic and simulacra will be the anchor point between the poem and the novel. By doing this and following the tradition of Ariosto studies about madness, symbology of the ring, and narrative technique, the novel will be studied in its mythological stratification. Finally, the crossing between suggestions of the lunar myth and annotations from the manuscript of the novel will be used to determine the years of the narrated events.Downloads
