Abstract

This paper describes the different metaphorical uses of the weather verbs piovere and grandinare in some tales of Italo Calvino and Primo Levi. In particular the study explores verbal valency changes, semantic extensions of the subjects involved and pragmatic-communicative effects activated by basic verbal valence increase. The analysis ends with some valency, semantic and pragmatic considerations on the metaphorical use of the weather nouns pioggia and grandine.
