Abstract

The following article is a survey of the classical sources of Bella Mano by Giusto de’ Conti, considered by many an avant-garde work within the lyric panorama of the Italian Renaissance. Through the accurate analysis of several literary topoi and continuous textual comparison, this paper will delve into Conti’s familiarity with elegy and also determine his modus operandi, which, according to the fifteenth-century proto-Petrarchism tradition, reuses ancient sources and combines them with more modern outputs.
