On a Hispanic tessera hospitalis of disputed authenticity

Keywords: tessera hospitalis, indigenous family units, Lusitania, hospitium, syntax of inter

Abstract

A new reading of the last line of a Hispanic tessera hospitalis of unknown provenance is argued for in this paper. Its authenticity has been questioned, but the new reading involves a change in the identification of the region that the gentilitates mentioned in the text belonged to, with relevant implications. Furthermore, in relation to certain syntactic problems that had been pointed out, parallels that support the development of the initial abbreviation H · F as hospitium factum and the appropriateness of the construction with the preposition inter that occurs in the inscription are provided.
