Martial: from the first attempts to the conquest of the ars
Abstract
The translations of Martial’s works show errors of various kinds, caused by the conciseness of many of poet’s expressions, by misunderstandings of the structure of the epigrams or of a particular meaning of the terms. There are cases in which the unusual placement of words also causes errors at a syntactic level. All this obscures the poet’s thinking in whole or in part, as I have tried to demonstrate in the following pages.
