The editions of Antonio Llull’s "Progymnasmata Rhetorica"
Abstract
In this work we study, analyse and compare the editions of Antonius Lullus’ Progymnasmata Rhetorica to determine the actual number of editions, to demonstrate the differences among them and to establish which is the first one. In order to do so, we offer a descriptive study of the known editions as well as of a hitherto unstudied one, and compare their distinctive features. We can conclude that this work has been preserved in three editions, 1550, 1551 and 1572, and that the so-called c.1548 edition, recorded in library catalogues, is just a copy of the 1550 edition although it has lost the colophon. Besides, the one edited nowadays as of 1550 is in fact a copy of the 1572 edition, but it has lost some final pages and the title page where the date, place of edition and editor were registered.
