Abstract

This paper is aimed at studying the way in which the opposition between men of words and men of action was exploited and at the same time called into question by Roman epic poets. The ambiguities which can destabilize a net distinction between both types were pointed out by Virgil in the the debate between Drances and Turnus (Aen. 11.336ff.) and stressed by Ovid in the judgment of the arms (Met.13.1ff.), and pervade the verbal contests of Hanno and Mago in Silius Italicus (8.246ff.; 11.501ff.) and of Meleager and Ajax Telamonius in Valerius Flaccus (3.645ff.).
