The sports ideology of self-care. A review of the critical relevance of Michel Foucault's late project

Keywords: Foucault, self-care, sport, neoliberalism, Ferlosio

Abstract

This paper sets out to investigate the link between the Foucauldian project of an aesthetics of existence and neoliberal ideology in order to review the critical validity of the former in the context of the latter. To this end, the main features of self-care in Foucault's late studies are investigated and compared with the competitive elements of the ethics of business, sport and war, mainly through the work of Rafael Sánchez Ferlosio. As a result of the research, it is concluded that Foucault's proposal contains some elements of a war-sport ideology that can be identified as neoliberal or hegemonic common sense.
