Abstract

The so called “civil morals” has three main features: it is an “Ethics of minimals”, it is fully rational, and it is established by consensus. Nonetheless, ethics is not measured by the number of precepts, and ethical systems cannot be classified by the yardstick of quantity. Moreover, it is a false ground to think of it as a uniform reasonal thinking versus a plurality in religious beliefs. And if consensus is just the result of a ballot box, it can easily become the dictatorship of the majority. So the civil morals should be sought in the widespread sense of justice instead of setting up a new system.
