About Love
An Exchange between Descartes and Chanut (December 1, 1646, February 1, 1647)
Abstract
We translate below a portion of the correspondence between René Descartes (1596-1650) and Hector-Pierre Chanut (1600-1662) about love. These are three letters, two versions of Chanut's to Descartes and Descartes' extensive response. The interest of this exchange lies in its dating at an intermediate moment between the first drafts and the completion of the Treatise of the Passions, the opinion on a variety of atypical topics in Descartes, such as politics and theology, and the development of a theory about love. It includes a historical and problematic presentation, notes and a specific bibliography on the topic.
