Metaphysics, Dynamics and Ether in Kant's Theoretical Philosophy
Abstract
In accordance with a thesis by R. Torretti, the present article attempts to show how philo-sophical reflection contributes to detect and discard unnecessary concepts in science. For this purpose, the case of Kant's theoretical philosophy has been chosen. This exposition requires a description both of the problems raised by the ether hypothesis and of the considerations that motivate its replacement by a transcendental postulate. In order to avoid the possible atomistic consequences of transcendental formalism, this substitution seeks to reform the concept of experience, installing a growing dynami-zation in Kant’s understanding of matter. Finally, it will be seen that, for Kant, it was a philosophical reflection on experience that put an end to his speculations about a physical ether.
