Note on the Catalogue of the Library of E. W. von Tschirnhaus
Abstract
The note offers some clarifications on the Catalogue of the Tschirnhaus's Library, printed in 1723 and published in a previous issue of this journal, based on a comparison with the manuscript Catalogue of the library, drawn up in 1709, a few months after Tschirnhaus's death. The manuscript Catalogue also fails to record the presence of Spinoza's works. However, the presence in this Catalogue of a work, also absent from the printed one (the infamous Homo politicus, hoc est: Consiliarus novus, officiarius et aulicus, secundum hodiernam Praxin, written by Philipp Andreas Oldenburger, an author criticized by Spinoza and his circle and about whom Pieter Van Gent had written to Tschirnhaus referring to Spinoza's Opera posthuma), allows us to credit the most plausible hypothesis that the volume of Spinoza's Opera, as well as Homo politicus, disappeared from the library and were not collected in the Catalogue because of their character as 'infamous' works
