Ethics of pain in Miguel de Unamuno
Abstract
This paper aims to tackle the ethics of pain which is presented in Miguel de Unamuno´s thought. For this purpose, based on his fundamental writings, it is analysed the impact of death and pain on the vital behavior of the human being, and also is studied his conception of love as a consolation healing the tragic sense of life. Finally, the direct influence of Blaise Pascal in the unamunian ethics of pain is shown. Thus, as far as the value of suffering in life is revealed, it is concluded that pain guarantees our existence, meanwhile a suffering existence guarantees us the love and the hope in the immortality of the human soul.
