From Rhetoric to Aesthetics: the Origin of Aesthetics as Philosophy of Literatur in Spain
Abstract
Aesthetics was introduced in Spain with the foundation of the system of public instruction and linked to the teaching of rhetoric and poetics. In 1814, the liberals proposed to combine rhetoric and poetics in a single discipline that would provide the principles of literature. These principles had been developed for the belles-lettres and the fine arts since the 18th century, and from them would emerge aesthetics as a science of taste and beauty. Aesthetics became part of the subject of Literature in 1846 under the influence of French eclectic philosophy and, in particular, the Victor Cousin´s theory of aesthetics. This led to the production of the first texts on aesthetics in Spain, oriented towards the teaching of literature.
