Philosophy of history, war and exile: The eclipse of Utopy in Eugenio Imaz’s Thought
Abstract
This paper aims at providing an interpretation of Eugenio Imaz’s Philosophy of History. By so doing, this paper delves further into how Imaz’s historical optimism based upon the idea of utopia dealt with the tragic events that shattered Spanish history in the 30s. As a consequence, Imaz’s confidence in the II Spanish Republic was fractured by the events that forced him into exile. This interpretation of Imaz’s thought and biography paves the way toward understanding how dealing with this pathbreaking events from the framework of his philosophy of history account for the fading of the notion of utopia which allows us to open new bridges between the historical and intellectual horizon of Ímaz and the European context of the second half of the twentieth century.
