Dialectic of Infinite Self-Consciousness and Pure Criticism in Bruno Bauer
Abstract
Young Hegelians’ (Junghegelianer) work concludes the classical period of German philosophy. Bruno Bauer (1809-1882) -which in many aspects was considered as the mentor of the movement- was one of their greatest exponents. In the first section of this paper, it is put into context Bauer’s figure against the background of the disputes generated within the Hegelian school. Next, we analyze in more detail two central notions of his thought, especially during the period 1829-1848: his dialectic of infinite self-consciousness (unendlichen Selbstbewußtsein) and the form adopted by his pure criticism.
