“Sar... Ko(a)f...” Sarah Kofman’s names

Keywords: aporia, double, female, mimesis, Sarah Kofman, writing

Abstract

Based on a reading of some of the works of the philosopher Sarah Kofman (especially those dedicated to E.T.A. Hoffmann, Gérard de Nerval, Sigmund Freud, as well as her unique autobiographical writing), these pages trace the intimacy between two figures (‘the double’ and ‘the woman’), in order to expose, firstly, two modalities of a single being, metamorphic and aporetic, and, secondly, how this being is identified, in his own work and in much of what has been written based on it, with two abyssal improprieties: ‘death’ and ‘writing’.
