Experience of Art Therapy in a Foster care center

Keywords: Art therapy, Foster care, minors, relationships, safe space

Abstract

This paper describes the art therapy process of a group of minors living in residential care, subsequently developing two individual case studies of the same group. In the course of 12 art therapy sessions, significant relational and behavioral changes were developed. These changes were identified in three phases of the process: adaptation, alliance and farewell. Art therapy appeared to provide these children with a safe space in which to express themselves, explore and be, through the use of art materials, giving them the opportunity to engage in a relationship based on respect and acceptance. Art therapy work, through the processes of creation and symbolization, can be an experience that benefits their self-esteem and reinforces their self-confidence, producing an improvement in their relationships.
